The Upper:
- Nike continued with a super lightweight Teijin synthetic material
- The synthetic was very lightweight and durable, a classic Mercurial performance aspect that was successfully used for a number of years
- The Vapor IV featured the iconic lace cover design to help with a secure, snug fit, and to keep the laces from getting in the way
The Sole Plate:
- The SL version was the first Mercurial model to feature a full carbon fiber sole plate
- The lightest sole plate design on the market, that would later be used in the Superfly I, II, III, and IV
